Abuja Earth Tremors: NGSA says no Cause for Concern

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), has assured Abuja residents following the recent tremor experienced in Mpape, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, NGSA Director-General, Prof. Olusegun Ige, emphasized that the agency is actively monitoring the tremors and has determined that they pose no significant threat to the environment.

According to Ige, the Monitoring Station at Katampe has been recording notable ground movements with high moment magnitudes since September 13, 2024. Despite this, the tremors have been classified as low in intensity.

Ige explained that the tremors are the result of accumulated stress along identified faults, releasing seismic energy which traveled through fractures, affecting various areas of the FCT.

He added, “There are multiple epicentres associated with the recent tremor. Most are located northeast of the NGSA-5 Seismic Station around Mpape, with a few southwest near Katampe.”
