Nigerian Government Issues Flood Alert as Neighbouring Cameroon Plans to Open Lagdo Dam

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has called for increased vigilance from states along the Benue River due to the planned release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Ibrahim Mohamed, warned that states likely to be affected include Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers.

The agency also urged governments at all levels to implement preparedness measures to mitigate potential flooding. Water release from the dam will begin at 100 cubic meters per second and may increase to 1,000 cubic meters per second depending on upstream inflows.

Cameroon assured that the release will be regulated to prevent major flooding downstream, and NIHSA emphasized that there is no immediate cause for concern, with current water levels remaining safe. The agency will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates.
