The federal government has launched the National Youth Skills Programme (NYSP), a major initiative aimed at tackling youth unemployment and equipping young people with crucial skills for the future.
At the unveiling event in Abuja on Thursday, Minister of Youth Development Jamila Ibrahim highlighted the programme’s objectives. The NYSP aims to cut youth unemployment by 20% over the next five years and boost youth-led enterprises by 50%.
Ibrahim emphasized the programme’s commitment to adaptability and effectiveness, stating, “Through regular assessments and data analysis, we will refine our strategies to ensure that we stay on course and no one is left behind. With the right training, our youth can secure employment and become key drivers of economic growth.”
In addition to technical skills, the government is focused on providing financial support. Ibrahim noted that the Nigerian Youth Investment Fund has allocated 110 billion naira for youth-led businesses in 2024. The forthcoming National Youth Development Bank will further support this effort with grants, loans, and mentorship.
The minister also stressed the programme’s commitment to inclusivity, aiming for 50% female participation and dedicated pathways for young women in fields like technology, healthcare, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, the programme will ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities through partnerships with local and international organizations.
The NYSP will track key performance indicators, including job creation, the success of youth-led businesses, and their overall impact on national economic growth.
