FRSC Clinches Kofi Annan Award as Africa’s Best Road Safety Agency

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has been named the best road safety agency in Africa, receiving the prestigious Kofi Annan Road Safety Award at the 3rd edition of the ceremony held in Ezulwini, Kingdom of Eswatini, South Africa.

This was disclosed in a statement released Thursday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide.

Ogungbemide described the award as a monumental milestone in the Corps’ journey spanning nearly four decades of unwavering commitment to saving lives on Nigerian roads.

“This achievement validates our years of dedication, resilience, and passion for road safety,” he said. “It also reinforces Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting safer road practices across the African continent.”

The Kofi Annan Road Safety Award was initiated by the Office of the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy on Road Safety, in collaboration with the Kofi Annan Foundation. The award is aimed at honoring the legacy of the late Kofi Annan, a former UN Secretary General and a passionate advocate for safer roads in Africa.

According to Ogungbemide, the recognition stands as a “badge of honour” for Nigeria and a testament to President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering support for the FRSC.

“This award is not just for the Corps; it’s a reflection of President Tinubu’s belief in our ability to be a model agency for Africa,” he said. “Our consistent efforts to reduce road crashes and promote safe driving have finally gained continental recognition.”

Reacting to the honour, the Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, expressed deep gratitude to Nigerians and stakeholders in the road safety ecosystem.

“This award is a testament to our unrelenting passion for road safety and the collective support of the motoring public,” Mohammed stated. “We’ve achieved this feat through strategic innovation, public education, community engagement, and full deployment of technology and safety protocols.”

He emphasized the importance of collaboration, noting that partnerships with local and international stakeholders have been central to the Corps’ success.

The award was received on behalf of the FRSC by the Principal Staff Officer to the Corps Marshal, Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Meshach Jatau.

The FRSC’s recognition reinforces Nigeria’s growing reputation as a leader in road safety management across the African continent.
