The Nigerian Senate has approved the South West Development Commission Establishment Bill 2024. This decision followed the bill’s third reading, which took place on Thursday.
Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, presented a report outlining the bill’s aims for socio-economic growth in the South West. He emphasized that, upon receiving presidential assent, the commission would be funded through the federation account and contributions from development partners to address regional infrastructural and ecological challenges.
Following the bill’s passage, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, praised the committee’s efforts and reiterated that the commission would help tackle the South West’s development issues. He noted that President Bola Tinubu has supported similar initiatives and is expected to endorse this bill as well.
