Central Bank of Nigeria Raises Alarm Over Surge in Fake Messages, Urges Public Vigilance

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a fresh warning to Nigerians over a growing wave of fraudulent messages and online communications falsely attributed to the Bank, cautioning citizens to stay alert to avoid falling victim to scams.

In a statement released মঙ্গলবার night, the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Hakama Sidi-Ali, said the Bank had observed a “significant increase in deceptive emails, SMS, and online posts” crafted to mislead the public and extract sensitive personal information.

According to the statement, “these fraudulent messages often contain links designed to trick recipients into clicking, thereby granting scammers access to their personal and financial data.” It added that such communications also распространяют false narratives about the Bank’s leadership, licensing operations, and policy decisions.

The apex bank emphasized the need for vigilance, advising Nigerians “to refrain from engaging with suspicious links or unverified websites” and warning against sharing confidential information on questionable platforms.

“The safest way to confirm any information concerning the Bank is through our official website and trusted media channels,” the statement noted.

The CBN further urged members of the public to report any suspicious emails, messages, or websites to relevant law enforcement agencies for immediate investigation and action.

Reaffirming its commitment to financial system security, the Bank stated that it is “continuously enhancing its cybersecurity infrastructure in collaboration with relevant agencies to safeguard Nigerians from digital fraud.”
