NUJ FCT Impeaches Chairman, Dissolves Executive Committee…Sends Resolution to National Secretariat

The Abuja Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has formally impeached its Chairman, Comrade Patrick Osaretin Osadebamwen, along with his executive committee members. This decision was reached during a Congress held on Saturday by NUJ members in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The impeachment, detailed in a resolution addressed to the NUJ National Secretariat, was driven by Osadebamwen’s alleged violation of the union’s constitution.

According to the resolution, “This followed the flagrant violation of Article 5(9d) of the NUJ Constitution, which stipulates that the Credentials Committee at the State Council level must be nominated by the State Congress, subject to the approval of the National Secretariat. Membership of the committee must consist of union members in good financial standing who have no intention of contesting in the elections.”

The Congress accused the impeached chairman of overstepping his authority by handpicking members of the Credentials Committee, in what was described as a deliberate move to undermine the constitutional process.

“In a premeditated attempt to violate the NUJ Constitution, the chairman took the law into his own hands,” read the resolution. “This led to members exercising the powers vested in the Congress, passing a vote of no confidence, and ultimately impeaching the chairman and his executives with a two-thirds majority.”

The Congress called on the NUJ National Secretariat to intervene swiftly in the crisis to restore order.

“We invite the national leadership of NUJ to step in and address the prevailing confusion at the FCT Council to save the face of the union,” the statement added.

A list of signatures supporting the impeachment was also included in the communication to the National Secretariat.
